Organizations, like all living things in nature, must respond and adapt to changes in their environment in order to be healthy and thrive. Universities are no exception. Universities have had to face formidable changes in their environment: technological advances, changes in population demographics, evolution in student learning styles, fiscal pressures, and expanding scrutiny by the public and all levels of government. Responding to the potential impact of these changes, Michigan State University, under the leadership of President Lou Anna K. Simon, has advanced a strategic framework—Bolder by Design—that challenges the university community to accelerate its pursuit of big ideas and elevate its performance to sustain its position as one of the world’s great public research universities.
One of Bolder by Design’s imperatives and calls to action is to “advance our culture of high performance.” This imperative is the particular domain of the Office of the EVP for Administrative Services, which plays a catalytic role in reviewing and analyzing strategies, policies, and processes in a number of service units and other entities on campus. Working with these units, we assist them with conducting reviews of their productivity and other performance indicators, and we aid them in advancing their productivity through culture change. We also work closely with unit leadership teams on identifying appropriate outcome-based goals and implementing plans for reaching those goals.
